While countless empires and states have claimed to be a Christian nation, the reality is that Christian Nations simply cannot exist...

Anyone who has spent time in our archives knows that we have extensively discussed the problems of Christian Nationalism, and anyone who has seen our social media conversations has also seen the responses from the Nationalists. One response, which is becoming more common, is this idea that a nation must either be Christian or it must be anti-Christ. The irony of this distinction is that it is almost correct, but not for the reasons they think. The reality is that Christian Nations cannot exist. The alternative then is that the nations are of this world, and not the Kingdom. However, the part they miss is that the Christian Nationalism solution is Anti-Christ itself, which is also a major reason why a Christian Nation cannot exist.

CHRISTIAN NATIONALISM IS ANTICHRIST

We have talked about this many times over the years, and we most likely will continue to have to make this statement frequently: Christian Nationalism is anti-Christ. There is no other word to describe this movement but anti-Christ. It’s not even hard to show this reality, yet it is still argued endlessly by the Nationalism Apologists. Look at the definition of Nationalism in the Oxford English Dictionary:

NOUN: identification with one's own nation and support for its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations.

Now compare this with to what Paul describes in Philippians 2, as part of the attitude of Christ Jesus:

3 Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. 4 Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

Nationalism is completely counter to the attitude of Christ Jesus. It is by definition anti-Christ. Nationalism pushes for self-interest and brings detriment to others. Christ calls us to submit to the needs of others, even to our own demise. Nationalism cannot be Christian. They cannot coexist.

But this doesn't necessarily lead to the second point. After all, not all countries that claim to be Christian hold to Nationalism. Throughout history monarchies, theocracies, and even modern democracies have all claimed to be Christian. However, the basic premise remains. It is because of the call of Christ that Christian Nations cannot exist.

CHRISTIAN NATIONS CANNOT EXIST

We touched on this in the past as well. “The Hypothetical Christian Island”, our post on “President Jimmy Carter”, and our commentary on “Romans 13” all touch on this idea about Christian Nations, but recent comments from the White House, Pentagon, Congress, and CNN Interviews have made it necessary to spell this out completely.

Christian Nations cannot exist because the moment a collective group of people begins to organize themselves under Christian teachings, they cease to be a nation and become a Church. Likewise, the moment the Church attempts to organize itself into a nation, it can no longer be categorized as Christian. This is actually simple to illustrate, and it only requires two straightforward scenarios.

  1. Another nation seeks aid as they are starving from famine. The Christian nation is also hurting from the famine, but has just enough food to survive. What should the Christian Nation do?

  2. The Christian Nation is being threatened by a neighboring nation's military. How should the Christian Nation respond?

These seem like simple scenarios, right? The nation has to care for its citizens, and so we feed ourselves and we defend ourselves, right? That's what nations do. But these nations claim to be Christian. They claim to follow the teachings of Jesus. So then how should they respond:

38 “You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. 39 But I tell you, don’t resist an evildoer. On the contrary, if anyone slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 As for the one who wants to sue you and take away your shirt, let him have your coat as well. 41 And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and don’t turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. 43 “You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. For He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing out of the ordinary? Don’t even the Gentile do the same? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Also consider: Matthew 19, Matthew 25, Matthew 26Luke 4, Luke 10, Luke 22, Luke 23, and John 13 from Jesus Himself. Not to mention what Paul has to say in Ephesians 5, Galatians 2, I Corinthians 13, Romans 12-14, and Philippians 2-4.

So, looking at the teachings of Jesus and the Apostles, how should a Christian Nation respond to another nation in need or a violent aggressor demanding submission

Christian Nations cannot exist because for a nation to survive, it must abandon the very things that mark Christians as different from the rest of the world. A nation that defends the people entrusted to it cannot follow the teachings of Jesus. And this is how it is supposed to be! Because if the empires of the world were capable of living as Jesus commanded, then there would be no need for the church. There would have been no need for a Savior. And there would be no enemies to destroy for the glory of the kingdom. Christian Nations cannot exist for the same reason that Nationalism is anti-Christ, because the Kingdom of God is completely counter to the Kingdoms of this World
